2009 set Records for Online Advertising

In spite of the overall economy downturn 2009 set record revenue of 1.5 billion euro (USD 2.1bn/GBP 1.3bn) for the German online advertising industry.

According to market researcher Thomson Media Control revenues for banner, pop-up and streaming ads grew by 17.8% and are now on an all-time high level. Because ads can be tailored to the viewers’ interests and needs websites are proving more and more as less expensive but highly effective media for advertising, the study says.

The largest online advertisers are telecommunications and online services providers who account to about 400 million euro. The media and entertainment sector spent 198 million on online advertising, the finance industry 195 million. The retail sector was accountable for 192 million and travel and tourism spent a total of 180 million euro on web advertising.
