German Online Downloads Market up 50%

Download-Boom: Market grows to €390 billion

	Number of files increases 43% to 90 million per year
	Continued growth expected for 2011

Berlin, 6 December 2010 – Germans have spent a record €390 billion for online file downloads to stationary and mobile devices. According to BITKOM that’s an increase of more than 49% compared to the previous year. The number of downloads of music files, games, videos, audio books and software is anticipated to grow to 90 million by year’s end, an increase of 43% compared to 2009, says the study GfK conducted for BITKOM.

Achim Berg, VP at BITKOM says: “This is by far the strongest growth in years. And thanks to faster Internet access and more attractive offers this boom is to continue. For 2011 we expect another increase of at least 30%.”

On average the price per one download is €4.41, says the study. Two thirds of the files are downloaded by men and 57% of all online downloaders are 30 years of age and above.

This business is shifting towards mobile devices in the near future, Berg says. UMTS (3G) coverage in Germany is good and wide-spread and the successor technology, LTE, is now about to start and allow for even faster download speed. More choice and lower prices in tablet PC market is, too, contributing to this download boom.
